Last Updated: Sep 13, 2012 08:36AM MDT

This is the guide for setting up Git on OS X. There is also a guide for Windows.

Using Git can be intimidating at first, but once you get past the initial learning curve you'll wonder how you ever worked without it.

After reading this, you should be able to:

  •  Install Git
  •  Generate a SSK Key
  •  Add it to your Pagoda Box account

Download and Install Git

If you're new to Git, here are some educational resources:

  1. Download and install the latest version of Git.

Set Up SSH Keys

We use SSH keys to establish a secure connection between your computer and Pagoda Box.

  1. Check for SSH keys.

     TerminalCheck for Existing SSH Keys

If you have an existing ssh key pair, skip to "Add SSH Key to Pagoda". Otherwise continue to step 2.

  2. Generate a new SSH key.

We want the default settings so when asked to enter a file in which to save the key, press enter.

     TerminalGenerate New SSH Key Pair

Now you need to enter a passphrase.

     TerminalEnter Passphrase

Which should give you something like this:

     TerminalKey Randomart

Add SSH Key to Pagoda

  1. Pagoda Box Account Settings

Log into your Pagoda Box account. Click “Account” -> “Add a new SSH Key”

  2. Key Name

Give your key a name for your own reference.

  3. Copy & Paste Public Key

Open the ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub file with a text editor (e.g. Notepad, TextEdit, or gedit). This is your public SSH key. You may need turn on “view hidden files” to find it because the .ssh directory is hidden. It’s important you copy your SSH key exactly as it is written without adding any newlines or whitespace. Now paste it into the “Key” field. Then click "Create Key".
